چکیده

Over the last several years, the Target Normal Sheath Acceleration (TNSA) mechanism in solid density plasmas produced by a laser pulse has achieved proton energies up to 10’s of MeV and quasi-monoenergetic beams at lower energies. Although solid-target experiments have demonstrated high-charge and low-emittance proton beams, little work has been done with gaseous targets which in principle can be operated at a very high repetition frequency. At the Neptune Laboratory, there is an ongoing experiment on CO2 laser driven proton acceleration using a rectangular (0.5x1.2mm) H2 gas jet as a target. The main goal is to study the coupling of the laser pulse into a plasma with a well defined density in the range of 0.5 to 2 times critical density and characterize the corresponding spectra of accelerated protons. Towards this end, the Neptune TW CO2 laser system is being upgraded to produce shorter 1-3ps pulses. These high-power pulses will allow us to investigate acceleration of protons via the TNSA and Radiation Pressure Acceleration mechanisms as well as their combination. The current status of the proton source experiment will be presented.

Enhanced Laser-driven Ion Acceleration via Forward Raman Scattering in a Ramped Gas Target

CO2 laser-plasma interactions provide a unique parameter space for using a gas jet for Target Normal Sheath Acceleration (TNSA) of ions instead of a thin foil target. The generation of 1-5 MeV protons from the interaction of a 3 ps TW CO2 laser pulse with a gas target with a peak density around the critical plasma density (10 cm) has been studied by 2D particle-in-cell simulations. The proton a...

Development of a High-repetition Rate Tw Co2 Laser Driver for a Compact, Variable Species Ion Source

CO2 laser-driven ion acceleration has been used to generate monoenergetic, MeV proton beams from a gas jet plasma. Use of a gas jet is advantageous because it offers interactions at a density around the critical plasma density for 10 μm pulses (10 cm) and can be run at a repetition rate of 1-100 Hz. This opens the possibility to create a variable species ion source easily switchable from proton...

CO2 Laser acceleration of forward directed MeV proton beams in a gas target at critical plasma density

The generation of 1–5 MeV protons from the interaction of a 3 ps TW CO2 laser pulse with a gas target with a peak density around the critical plasma density has been studied by 2D particle-in-cell simulations. The proton acceleration in the preformed plasma with a symmetric, linearly ramped density distribution occurs via formation of sheath of the hot electrons on the back surface of the targe...

Laser Energy Conversion to Solitons and Monoenergetic Protons in Near-critical Hydrogen Plasma*

Recent theoretical and experimental studies point to better efficiency of laser-driven ion acceleration when approaching the critical plasma density regime. Simultaneously, this is the condition for observing solitons: "bubble"-like quasi-stationary plasma formations with laser radiation trapped inside. Exploring this regime with ultra-intense solid state lasers is problematic due to the lack o...

Laser-plasma Interaction Studies Using above Critical Density Gas Jet Plasmas and a Multi-tw Co2 Laser*

CO2 laser-plasma interaction provides a unique parameter space for particle acceleration in a gas jet plasma taking place at a critical plasma density ncr ~ 10 cm and even at higher densities (3~10 ncr) of 10μm radiation. Here we report the latest results of our study of electron acceleration in a wide range of plasma densities 1~10 ncr using a multi-TW CO2 laser system at the UCLA Neptune Labo...
